What makes 'happiness' coaching different?

What makes 'happiness' coaching different?

It's a structured approach to coaching that draws on the science of happiness, joy and human fulfilment. Although it is led by your goals, happiness coaching brings a proven process to the coaching relationship. This makes it ideal for people who feel they need  stimulation and who wish to be challenged in their thinking, and is less passive than many other coaching approaches.

You and I work together in partnership, typically speaking once or twice a month online, using the  structure to progress through a series of powerful stages.  We'll work through the 9 barriers to happiness, completing activities, powerful discussions, , exercises and tools as appropriate. An engagement is for 12 x 1 hour sessions, usually over 6 - 12 months.

How much does it cost?

How much does it cost?

An online package of 12 sessions costs £1450, with no VAT to pay on that amount as I deliberately keep my business small enough to remain under the UK VAT threshold.

To put that in context, a car mechanic in the UK charges around £ 150 per hour and it costs around £ 2.5k to replace a central heating boiler...

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything we do, every decision we make, everything we strive for is because we think that achieving that will make us feel better. Everything. Every single choice. Sometimes that's a choice of the lesser of evils, but it's still because we think it'll make us feel better than the other choices available.

'Feeling better' is about our innate desire for happiness. Since it drives everything we do, I believe that understanding joy and happiness is the key to human evolution and meaning.

Research shows us that being happy makes a massive difference to every aspect of our lives: happy people : are more productive at work; form deeper and more satisfying relationships; are more resilient; heal faster and more effectively; are significantly less prone to mental health issues...the list goes on.

We erect many barriers to our own happiness, and have to cope with the frequently unhelpful influence of society, culture, marketing, social media, the expectations of others and, probably most powerful of all, our own unconscious mind. Happiness Coaching is designed to help you strip away or actively manage the '9 Barriers' we erect, while finding your authentic self and the desires that flow from who you truly are.

BUT DON'T BE DAUNTED ! Connecting with more happiness and joy doesn't mean you have to turn your life upside down and make enormous changes. That'd be unrealistic in any event, and unlikely to last. Small changes in different aspects of your life, the clarity that will come from the coaching journey, beginning to harness your unconscious mind so that its working with you...planting new roots gently and carefully so that they grow into a more joyful life for you.

I believe that the right time to start working on your happiness is always NOW. However, people are often triggered to start thinking about their happiness when:

  • They have achieved the goals they thought would make them happy, and found that it hasn't delivered the joy they imagined. This is often a point of some crisis for people, as they begin to wonder if there's something wrong with them. I worked with a colleague who ran group coaching weekends almost completely attended by people with significant wealth. He used to joke about the Lamborghinis and Mercedes in the car park contrasting with the unhappiness and lack of  fulfilment in the coaching room.

True joy is independent of the external conditions we experience: happiness is indeed a state of mind, and a state of mind you can learn to tap into much more frequently.  How many people have taken the time to think about what truly makes them happy? What emotions they are hoping to experience when they achieve their goals? Global research consistently tells us that people spend very little time indeed thinking about, planning for and really scrutinising their own happiness.
  • They are facing, or have been through, a significant life change and therefore are seeking to re/connect with what makes them happy in order to bring purpose and meaning. This may be retirement, divorce, becoming a parent or starting a new life chapter
  • They are keen to increase their body's effectiveness at healing and recovery: this may be after an accident, or to support treatment with serious or chronic illness, or to underpin their sporting or other physical goals
  • They are frustrated that despite their best efforts, they. do not feel 'happy' in their lives. This is probably. most people in the UK, if not in the world. Western Culture emphasises particular types of happiness that research shows us are fleeting, often unhealthy in the end and quite counterproductive.

Coaching shares many tools and skills with counselling, though it is not a substitute for therapy. However many of the  thinking patterns that hold us back from true happiness are those that ultimately feed our anxiety, and hence wider mental health issues. Happiness Coaching is very much designed to be of benefit to your whole self, at every level, You should not seek coaching as an alternative to therapy, but many people in therapy also work with a coach.
